INCLUDES ONE PAPERBACK STORYBOOK

This unit brings new levels of excitement and depth to the science of sound, reinforcing basic concepts while introducing students to the field of acoustical engineering.

Set in Ghana, near the home of forest elephants that are currently the subjects of an audio monitoring project called the Elephant Listening Project, the storybook and the unit lessons reinforce the idea that sound is vibration. Other concepts introduced and reinforced through hands-on actvities include pitch, volume, and the ways people can create "pictures" of different sounds.

In the culminating activity, students are challenged to design a way to visually represent the properties of a sound so that it is understood by their peers.
